India Visa Requirements for UK, AU, NZ, US & Canadian Residents:

UK, Australian, New Zealand, USA and Canadian passport holders can take advantage of India’s online visa service (subject to eligibility). Information about the e-Tourist Visa (eTV) process can be found at: Indian E Tourist Visa

The online application should be submitted a minimum of 4 working days and a maximum of 120 days in advance of proposed date of arrival. Entry to India must be within 120 days of the eTV approval date and the visa is valid for 60 days from arrival.

To apply online you’ll need to complete the application form, upload a copy of your passport data page, upload a passport sized photograph (full face, front view and eyes open, white background with no shadow) and pay the visa cost.

After submitting your application, you will receive a receipt number and within the coming days (the Government of India notes this as 4 days) you will receive authorization.

You will need to print a copy of this document to check-in for your flight and again at immigration when arriving to India. You are also required to carry a copy of the eTV at all times during your stay. These are 60 day, double-entry visas and are valid for entry into 16 designated airports: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Gaya, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Tiruchirapalli, Trivandrum & Varanasi.

The Indian Consulate requires a photograph that meets very strict requirements. We strongly recommend that you submit your photograph electronically to Visa Central so we can ensure it meets the stringent characteristics mandated by the Indian Consulate. Follow Indian e tourist visa, photo-service to upload your photo.  All electronic photo submissions must be taken within the last three months against an all-white background. It must show a full frontal view of your head with your face centered in the middle and with the tops of your shoulders visible. You must also display a neutral (non-smiling) expression with eyes open, mouth closed, and ears visible. No background light or shadows are permitted. You may not wear eyeglasses.  No headwear except for religious purposes. Do not wear a white shirt.  Should you elect to submit actual photographs then you must submit 2 photographs that meet all of the above criteria and:

  • Be exactly 2 inches by 2 inches square
  • Be printed on high-quality glossy photo paper
  • Not be affixed to your application, with no evidence of adhesive tape or staples
  • Passport photo vendors commonly produce photographs that do not meet these requirements. Visa Central cannot submit applications with incorrectly formatted photographs.

  • One recent 2 x 2 passport type photograph, in color, front view and with a plain/white background. Glasses should not be worn in these photos; photos should not be stapled to the application.

Proof of State Residency:

A clear photocopy of the applicant’s driver’s license or state issued ID is the best proof of address. The address on the ID must match the present address on the visa application exactly. Alternatively, the most recent major utility bill (Water, Gas, Electric, Sewage), or a copy of a valid/current lease containing both the landlord and tenant signature, may also be accepted.

If you want to stay in India for longer than 60 days then an e-visa will not be appropriate for you.  This article is going to explain step by step, in-depth, how to apply for an Indian visa from the UK. I have a similar post on how to apply for an Indian visa from the USA.  A long term tourist visa will allow you to have a visa to enter India between 1 and 5 years with multiple re-entries. The visa lets you stay in India for a maximum of 180 days per trip. If you want a 5-year visa, Biometric information will be collected at the VFS Centre. You cannot apply for a 5-year visa by post.

Steps to apply

  1. Visit the Indian E Tourist Visa website for visas and immigration in India and apply for a visa.
  2. On the day of your appointment, plan to arrive 15 minutes early at the visa application centre. Bring your appointment letter and application pack, your passport, along with a valid passport or travel document.

When you arrive at the visa application centre you will collect a token. Wait until your token is called to make your application.

Once the visa filing process is completed you will be issued with an acknowledgment receipt. Please hold on to your receipt as you will need this later to collect your documents.

Important note: You will not be able to submit further documents once your application has been submitted at the Indian Visa Online Process for application. The documents that you submitted at the time you made your application will be the only documents that are considered.

Please note that the status of your application shall be informed to you via SMS (if the same has been opted for during application submission) or via email on the ID that was provided during submission of application.

For counter cases applicants are required to come personally for passport collection with original receipt and copy of any Government Photo ID proof with signature. This is to ensure return of your passport/documents.
