What are the complete guide and how to apply for an Indian E-Visa?

Citizens who want to visit India for business/tourism/short duration medical treatment purposes can now obtain E- visa (officially called “E-Tourist Visa”).

  • E tourist visa
  • E Business Visa
  • E Medical Visa

E VISA is completely an online process where the applicant does not have to apply in person before the visa issuing authority. But all is not rosy when applying for India tourist visa online, the system is abysmal and the payment mode is the worst of any online mode so far. Also once you have tried to make the booking 3 times and fail, you will need to fill the entire visa form once more.

All Individual visa seekers who wish to stay in India for a longer period have to apply for the required Indian Visa online and submit the completed visa application form (printed) to the concerned Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) or directly to Indian Mission/ Post in the absence of IVAC, on the scheduled date of interview along with the required documents.

Two things to keep in mind before you begin:-

  1. Filling out the Indian Visa Application form online does not mean you have submitted it. The purpose of the online form is to make sure that you have filled in all the correct information in the right format for easier processing. If you make a mistake, you can start over and it will not affect your application. The only form that matters is the one you print out when you finish.
  2. You cannot alter the application after you print it as handwritten documents are not permitted. Once you print it out, if you want to make any change at all, you must start filling the application form from the beginning.

Country you are applying from – This means where you physically are now. It is usually the same as your permanent residence.

Indian Mission – Choose the mission/embassy that you want to issue your visa.

This is where you will be asked to enter any additional information that your visa requires.

Duration of Visa: Different countries have different duration of visa. You should check with the embassy in your country to see what options you have. Validity of your visa starts when it is issued, not when you land in India.

Purpose of Visa: It is very important that this matches exactly with the type of visa.

Expected Date Journey: This doesn’t need to be the exact date of your travel if you haven’t booked tickets, just close to the date.

After you complete all these 5 steps go through the entire application line by line as no changes can be done after submission. You will have to start from beginning all over again if you want to make changes after submission. Be extremely careful while you fill in the information as any mismatch may lead to visa rejection.

How to Apply Online for an Indian Visa (OR E-Visa)

India is one of the few remaining countries in Asia that I haven’t managed to visit — until this year! That’s why you can imagine how stoked I was when I first found out that I’ll be setting foot in its soil; after all, I’ve heard a LOT of great things about India’s culture, food, people and sights. Back then though, when my itinerary was finalized, I checked the immigration requirements and… I was surprised when I discovered that I had to get an Indian visa first before entering the country.

I say this because I once heard that there was a visa-on-arrival scheme to a lot of nationalities, but apparently, by 2014 they have changed it into an online ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) or E-Tourist Visa application.

What is India’s E-Tourist Visa?

The ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) or “E-Tourist Visa” (now aptly called as “E-Visa”) replaced the special visa-on-arrival policy in India and it is divided into 3 categories, namely:

  • E-Tourist Visa
  • E-Business Visa
  • E-Medical Visa

STEP 1: Determine if you are eligible for an Indian E-Visa

I will only be discussing the requirements for an Indian E-Tourist Visa since it’s an experience that I’ve gone through myself. For this, you must first determine if you are eligible by reviewing the following conditions.

STEP 2: Prepare the Required Documents and Information for your Application

Before you lodge your Indian visa application online, it’s best to prepare the following beforehand…

Documents (In English)

Scanned bio page of your passport (showing photo and other details)

NOTE: This must be in a .PDF file with a maximum size of 300kb. To learn how to make .PDF files, go here, and if you want to know how to compress .PDF files, read here. Make sure that when compressing, the details on your passport are not blurred and are still readable.

Recent digital photo that shows your full face (with white background)

NOTE: The photo must be a .JPEG file with a maximum size of 1MB. Make sure that the height and width of the photo is equal (either way, once you upload it, the website will help you crop the photo).

India Visa for Filipinos | How to Apply Online| E-Visa

We’re supposed to be in India now. For months, we had planned to go on a backpacking trip from Nepal to India to Sri Lanka. We had almost everything taken care of including our hotels and an India visa. But something personal came up so we had to cancel the whole thing. I’m still a little bit bummed, but I guess some things are really just out of our control.

The good news is because I have tried applying for an India visa, I can now write about the experience. I was actually quite surprised to learn that we needed a pre-issued visa to enter India. Filipinos used to be able to avail of visa-on-arrival, but that had been discontinued a couple of years ago.

Today, Philippine nationals visiting India may apply for an e-Tourist visa, e-Business Visa, or e-Medical visa. In this post, we’ll be focusing on the e-Tourist Visa only. It’s actually pretty easy. I finished my application in an hour and got my visa the next day. Here’s how to do it.

Indian Visa Requirements:

But first, here are the requirements.

It’s the shortest list of requirements for a visa application that I’ve seen. Basically, before you apply online, you must have the following:

  • Scanned copy of your passport’s bio page.
  • Recent photo. Front facing and against a white background.
  • Fee, you can pay via credit card or PayPal.

Indian Visa Application Process:

Make Sure You Are Eligible for an E-visa

  • Apply for an e-visa if at least 4 days in advance of the arrival date with a window of 120 days. The Embassy site gives this example: If you are applying on September 1 then you can select arrival date from September 5 to January 2.
  • Your sole objective in India is recreation (tour, sightseeing), visit friends or relatives, or casual business visit.
  • Your passport must have at least 6 months validity from your arrival date. It must also have at least two blank pages.
  • You must have a return ticket or an onward journey ticket and enough money to spend during your stay.
  • Apply for an e-visa only if you’re entering India via any of the following airports because these are the only ones that would accept it.

Complete the Requirements:

I enumerated the requirements above, but just in case you missed it, here’s the list again.

It’s the shortest list of requirements for a visa application that I’ve seen. Haha. Basically, before you apply online, you must have the following:
